benefits of a typing interview vs. online enneagram tests

If you'd like to engage with the Enneagram, I invite you to sign up for a one hour typing interview with me. Online tests, while certainly helpful, may lead some individuals to "land their type," but for others, online tests won't cut it. Because the Enneagram looks at motivations more than behaviors, sometimes it takes conversation to tease out the "why" under some of our personality's characteristics.
For example, a person may live and die by their to do list each day, but why do they make a task list?
*The type 3 wants to excel, be efficient, and they tend to gain a sense of their worth by what they achieve. *The type 7 may use a to do list to stay focused, to tame their "monkey mind," and to help them finish things they've started.
*The type 5 may use a list to motivate them out of thinking and into action. It may also help them manage their time wisely.
*The type 9 can sometimes attend to trivial tasks rather than attending to priorities. A task list may help them to take action on priorities.
Typing interviews can dig for the motivations under a person's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. What are they most desiring? What are they trying to avoid?
Another benefit of the typing interview is that not every person fits a textbook description of their type. Our 3 instinctual biases (preservation, social, sexual/one to one) overlay our personality type quite a lot, resulting in three different "flavors" of each Enneagram type. These are called the 27 subtypes, which makes a preserving type 4 look quite different than a social type 4, for example. Most people who mistype do so because they have not correctly identified their subtype.
Asking questions and deeply listening to clients has been such a sacred space. After I ended a typing interview on Zoom yesterday, my whole being had such a deep sense of gratitude for that hour of listening and honoring a person's story and in anticipating how this journey offers so much possibility into greater self-awareness, discovery, and freedom for them. It truly is a wholehearted journey.
